10 Songs for Spring

Hello everyone,

I have some songs to get you in the mood of the season.

I am trying to expand more of my music listening pool but still music tastes are subjective. So these songs are from what I listen to. If your favorite genre or artists aren’t on here, please share so I can enjoy them! 😉

Little Green by Joni Mitchell

This song I believe Mitchell wrote about her daughter that she ended up giving up for adoption as a baby. Years later they reunited actually.

This song is softly bittersweet and beautiful. Joni Mitchell always has a way of showing rich and raw emotion.

This song reminds me of spring and all that grows. There is a lyric that says, “Just a little green // Like the color when spring is born” We hear all the new life in this child she would not see but all the hopes she has for her future.

Favorite lyric: Child with a child pretending // Weary of lies you are sending home // So you sign all the papers in the family name // You’re sad and you’re sorry, but you’re not ashamed // Little green, have a happy ending

Blue Flower – The Gray Havens

This is a new song by this husband and wife duo. I am not sure what this song means but they have a new podcast called the The Blue Flower Podcast which should shed light on the background of it.

But it has a sweet melody and talks about flowers so I put it on the list! 🙂

Favorite lyric: Where are you blue flower // Come back and stay // ‘Cause I can’t find anything // Better than this ache

A Little Fall of Rain – from the musical Les Misérables

This song is really depressing but beautiful. And if you know these characters it is this half true and half false dying love song.

Favorite lyric: And you will keep me safe // And you will keep me close // And rain will make the flowers grow

This on is from Les Misérables: The Dream Cast in Concert.

This one from the 2012 film.

Hummingbird – Leslie Odom Jr.

This is just a fun song by a lovely singer. It is about a lovestruck guy (a flower) singing to the girl he loves ( a hummingbird) to notice him (“rest your wings on my flower”).

He talks too much about petals, trees, birds, and flowers for this one to not be on the list.

Favorite lyric: The problem is she’s not looking at me // I’m trying to catch her eye before the snow

He performs the song live in the video above for his NPR: Tiny Desk Concert.

Rainy Days and Mondays – The Carpenters

Ahhhh I love 70s music.

There are enough rainy days in the spring! So on the list it goes!

Favorite lyric: Talkin’ to myself and feelin’ old // Sometimes I’d like to quit // Nothin’ ever seems to fit

As by Stevie Wonder

Again, I love 70s music. Just listen to the entire album Songs in the Key of Life and be amazed!

This isn’t really the best example of a spring related song but I mean it opens with “As around the sun the earth knows she’s revolving // And the rosebuds know to bloom in early May // Just as hate knows love’s the cure // You can rest your mind assure That I’ll be loving you always”

So it counts! 🙂

This song is epically arranged and just an all around groovy soul jam session.

Favorite lyric: That God knew exactly where he wanted you to be placed // So make sure when you say you’re in it but not of it // You’re not helping to make this earth a place sometimes called Hell // Change your words into truths and then change that truth into love // And maybe our children’s grandchildren // And their great-great grandchildren will tell

All Things New – Andrew Peterson

Andrew Peterson is a wonderful writer. His songs fill me with such joy. This one is from his album Resurrection Letters, Vol. 2. It is a part of a three album set that centers around the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Spring is a time of new beginnings, and the greatest new beginnings is the one Jesus offers us through the Gospel/

Favorite lyric: Come frozen with shame // Come burning with guilt // My Jesus, he loves you still, // He loves you still

Spring by Tracy Chapman

This song is a total spring song! It is all about the new life around us in nature!

Favorite lyric: I’ve had the feeling // At the heart and in the core // The root of all things // But there’s a bud there’s a bulb // It will be blooming

Breezin’ by George Benson

This song just makes me think of spring days and sunshine! If you haven’t checked out this jazz guitarist…well…just do it now so I don’t have to finish that thought!

No lyrics! So I can’t have a favorite! 🙂

This is a live performance of the song wit Carlos Santana! 🙂

The Garden by Bobby McFerrin

This guy has been a recent favorite of mine. His technique and skill is hard to put into words so I’m going to use another source to describe it:

“Bobby McFerrin is a master of vocal improvisation, using his four-octave range in various techniques, from scat singing to polyphonic overtone singing to vocal percussion, working both unaccompanied and with instruments. Oftentimes he will sound like an entire band all by himself, sometimes using his own body as a percussion instrument.”

This song tells a lot of the story of creation and man’s first sin in Genesis.

Favorite lyric: There was the earth // There was the sky // And there in the tree // There crawled a lie

Well there you have it!

Please feel free to send me songs that put you in the spring mood!
